Need to unfollow hundreds of people on Instagram? If you go too fast, Instagram will temporarily block your ability to follow or unfollow anyone. Here's how to do it safely without triggering a restriction.
Upload your Instagram data export and get a sorted list of everyone who doesn't follow you back — ready to work through systematically.
Get my list →Instagram doesn't publish official limits, but based on widespread community testing in 2025–2026 these are the safe thresholds:
New accounts and accounts with lower follower counts tend to get restricted faster. If your account is under 6 months old, cut these limits in half to be safe.
⚠️ Never use bots or automation tools to mass unfollow. Instagram detects inhuman action patterns and will restrict or permanently ban accounts using them. Manual unfollowing, even in volume, is always safer.
Before unfollowing anyone, know exactly who you're targeting. IG Audit gives you a complete list of everyone you follow who doesn't follow you back — sorted and searchable, with direct links to each profile.
Export your Instagram data first:
IG Audit automatically flags deactivated accounts with a 💀 badge. These are the easiest and safest to unfollow first — there's no risk of awkwardness since the account no longer exists. Clear these out before moving on to active non-followers.
Aim for 50 unfollows per day. Open each profile from IG Audit's list, tap Unfollow on Instagram, then come back and check them off in IG Audit with the tick button. The pink strikethrough keeps your progress visible across sessions.
Don't do all 50 unfollows in one sitting. Spread them across the day — 15 in the morning, 15 at lunch, 20 in the evening. The more human your pattern looks, the less likely Instagram's detection systems are to flag it.
If you hit Instagram's limits, you'll see a message saying you can't follow or unfollow right now. This is a temporary restriction — usually lasting 24–48 hours. Don't attempt to work around it. Just wait it out, then resume at a slower pace when it lifts.
At 50 unfollows per day: unfollowing 500 people takes 10 days, 1,000 takes 20 days, and 2,000 takes about 40 days. It feels slow but it's the only safe way to do a large-scale cleanup without risking your account.
