Following too many accounts damages your Instagram experience in two ways: your feed gets cluttered with content you don't care about, and your engagement rate drops โ€” which hurts you if you're growing a personal brand or business account. Here's how to clean it up properly.

See exactly who to unfollow

Upload your Instagram data export and get a sorted list of everyone who doesn't follow you back โ€” ready to clean up in minutes.

Why your following count matters

Your follower-to-following ratio signals credibility. An account following 3,000 people with 500 followers looks very different to one following 500 people with 3,000 followers โ€” even if the content is identical. Cleaning up your following list:

Step 1 โ€” Find who doesn't follow you back

The first group to consider unfollowing is people who don't follow you back. Unless you're following them purely for their content (brands, celebrities, news accounts), there's often no reason to maintain a one-sided follow.

Use IG Audit to get this list instantly โ€” no Instagram login needed, just your data export.

How to export your data

  1. Open Instagram โ†’ Profile โ†’ Menu (โ˜ฐ) โ†’ Accounts Centre
  2. Your information and permissions โ†’ Export your information โ†’ Create export
  3. Select your account โ†’ Export to device
  4. Customise information โ†’ Followers and following only
  5. Date range: All time ยท Format: JSON
  6. Download the ZIP and upload it to igaudit.app

Step 2 โ€” Remove deactivated accounts

IG Audit automatically scans your non-followers list and flags accounts that appear to be deactivated or deleted. These are the easiest to remove โ€” they're definitely not coming back.

๐Ÿ’ก Start with the ๐Ÿ’€ tagged accounts first โ€” they're the lowest-hanging fruit and clear them out before deciding on active accounts.

Step 3 โ€” Work through the list systematically

IG Audit lets you check off accounts as you unfollow them on Instagram, with a strikethrough so you track your progress. Open each profile in a new tab, unfollow, then check them off.

Work in batches of no more than 50โ€“60 per day. Instagram's spam detection watches for rapid mass unfollowing and may temporarily restrict your account if you go too fast.

Step 4 โ€” Audit your following for irrelevant content

After removing non-followers, go through your following list and ask: does this account still add value to my feed? Unfollow anything that:

How often should you do this?

A thorough audit every 3โ€“6 months keeps your list healthy. Set a reminder, export your latest Instagram data, and run it through IG Audit. The whole process takes under 30 minutes even for large accounts.
