How to Clean Up Your Instagram Following List

Following too many accounts damages your Instagram experience in two ways: your feed gets cluttered with content you don't care about, and your engagement rate drops — which hurts you if you're growing a personal brand or business account. Here's how to clean it up properly.

Why your following count matters

Your follower-to-following ratio signals credibility. An account following 3,000 people with 500 followers looks very different to one following 500 people with 3,000 followers — even if the content is identical. Cleaning up your following list:

• Improves your follower-to-following ratio
• Boosts your average engagement rate (fewer irrelevant accounts = higher % of followers who engage)
• Cleans up your feed so you actually enjoy scrolling
• Removes dead weight from deactivated and inactive accounts

Step 1 — Find who doesn't follow you back

The first group to consider unfollowing is people who don't follow you back. Unless you're following them purely for their content (brands, celebrities, news accounts), there's often no reason to maintain a one-sided follow.

How to export your data

1. Open Instagram → Profile → Menu (☰) → Accounts Centre
2. Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export
3. Select your account → Export to device
4. Customise information → Followers and following only

Step 2 — Remove deactivated accounts
